Camels Versus Pigs

Wednesday, May 30th, 2007

CamelThis is quite possibly the strangest race I have ever heard of, even stranger than the classic tale of the hare and the tortoise! However, if you want to see pigs racing camels then you can at Kempton Park Racecourse on the 6th June.

PigThere will of course still be horse racing but when they have finished two races consisting of pigs and camels will take place. The camels will be ridden by some of Britain’s leading jockey’s and the night is set to be great entertainment.

Gates open at 5pm and the first horse race will begin at 7pm, the pigs and camels will race at the end of the evening and all will be finished at 11pm. Tickets prices start from £15 or for £16 you can book a Wednesday Winner ticket entitling you to a free drink, race-card and bet. If you want to go the whole hog then for £65 you book a table in the Panoramic Restaurant for the evening.

Call the ticket hotline on 01372 470047 or book online at the official Kempton Park website.

Grand Designs Live

Wednesday, May 30th, 2007

Grand Designs LiveIf you’re a fan of the hit TV show Grand Designs or you are a bit of an interior design lover yourself then get down to the ExCeL London on the 8th – 10th June for Grand Designs Live 2007. The venue will be hosting an interior design exhibition offering inspiration for kitchens, bathrooms, bedrooms, fireplaces, gardens and all the accessories you can imagine. There are many great design shows in London but this is thought to be one of the best and really takes interior design to the extreme.

Last year the exhibition attracted over 50,000 visitors all looking for ideas for their own homes or for their client’s homes. The exhibition is a fantastic day out with excellent places to dine; last year Jamie Oliver brought highlights of his restaurant Fifteen to the show.

The exhibition will be open on Friday 8th and Saturday 9th from 10am to 7pm, and Sunday 10th from 10am to 6pm. Tickets cost £14 in advance, £18 on the door and children under 16 go free. See the Grand Designs Live official website for more information.

Cheap and Cheerful Accomodation

Monday, May 21st, 2007

Cheap and Cheerful AccomodationLooking for a cheap and funky place to stay in London? Well if you don’t mind sharing a room then Generator Hostels could be the perfect place to crash. There’s one in Berlin and one in Bloomsbury London which is a great central location for trendy East London areas such as Shoreditch as well as popular West London nights out such as Chinawhites.

Although similar to traditional hostels with dorm like rooms for 12 people (you can choose mixed sex or female only costing a meagre £10 per person) you can also get smaller four or two bed rooms that you can share with mates for a fraction of the price of a hotel. A four bed room can work out to as little as £17 per person in the summer season. If you a feeling a bit shy, there are a few one bedroom private rooms again costing much less than a London 2 or 3 star hotel. There is a bar in the hostel and various activities take place every night….most of which involve drinking! Take the Generator tour on the website to see pictures of where you can stay

Chelsea Flower Show Starts Tomorrow

Monday, May 21st, 2007

Flower ShowEvery May Central London is brightened up by the beautiful colours and designs at the Chelsea Flower Show. The show brings together the latest in gardening trends and shows off the best garden designers.

There will be 20 gardens each with a different theme, last year we saw ideas such as ‘The Jurassic Coast Garden’ and ‘The Gorilla Jungle Garden’ and this year is expected to be just as exciting.

30 smaller gardens will also be on display under categories such as ‘City’, ‘Chic’ and ‘Courtyard’. All the creations will provide great inspiration for visitors to take home so they can test some ideas for themselves.

The Chelsea Flower Show begins tomorrow and ends on Saturday 26th May. Read more about times and prices over at Visit London.

South West Trains – Cheap Days Out

Monday, May 21st, 2007

groupsave.gifI don’t really like South West trains, they are usually a pretty big rip off compared to other train companies but they do have a good offer with their ‘Group Save’ tickets. I’ve been going by train to London or nearby attractions such as Thrope Park and Chessington World of adventures with friends since I was about 14 but I’ve only recently discovered this offer.

When three or more of you travel together you can get three or four adult tickets for the price of 2! This usually makes great savings of at least a third of the individual ticket price. That’s an even bigger saving that using a Young Person’s Rail Card! The only snag is you have to make sure you travel there and back together and sit with each other on the train – so make sure you don’t lose any of your friends on your day out in London.

Picnic On The Green

Tuesday, May 15th, 2007

Village ParkOn Thursday 24th – Friday 25th May Trafalgar Square will be transformed into a village green! The usual modern appearance of the Square will be covered with 2,000 square feet of turf for the public to enjoy a family picnic or some sunbathing if the weather heats up. If you’re lucky enough to have one of the days off you could spend the whole day relaxing on the village green in a deck chair with a good book.

A café on the Square will be selling sandwiches and other picnic items and the Trafalgar Hotel will be supplying posh food and drink items to take away. It is free to get into the area and will be open until 6pm on the 25th.

Breast Cancer Awareness Moonwalk 2007

Monday, May 14th, 2007

Walk the Walk LogoOn Saturday 19th May the streets of London will be filled with hundreds of Moonwalkers wearing decorated bras raising money for breast cancer. The walkers will be taking part in the London Midnight Moonwalk that has raised millions of pounds for the charity over the last few years.

The Moonwalk idea was founded by a lady called Nina Barough in 1996, she power walked the New York City marathon in a decorated bra to raise money and awareness of breast cancer. Since then, thousands of people have joined her and the Midnight Moonwalk is an extremely successful event. Both men and women take part and many compete to have the best dressed bra!

Breast Cancer is the most common cancer in the UK – almost 42,000 people are diagnosed every year, mainly women but some men as well. Although it is too late to enter the Midnight Moonwalk you can still pledge money, see the official Moonwalk website for all the details of the event and how you can help.
